I don't get it, what's so horrible about it? I saw it for the first time a few days ago, I liked it, it's fun, it's funny, it's maybe not TYPICAL 90s fantasy/action but it's in that general neighborhood. So what's everybody's problem with it?
shareI think people expected a direct adaptation with fireballs and the like. While that may have been fun, we got a weird industrial nightmare world. I actually liked it, but I grew up on these goofy 90s movies. I thought it was overall fun and Dennis Hopper was a pleasure. Hard to find that guy when he's not.
shareThis is a movie I wouldn't mind to see remade. I would like to see someone actually do something that's like the games. Or make the story line a little bit better instead because I remember watching this as a kid and it left me feeling dirty. I'm not sure if it's because it was nothing like Super Mario or because it was filmed in like a slime ball like setting, but either way, I'd love to see it remade.

They could have done a lot better on it instead of giving us this hyper evolved dinosaur bullsh!t like perhaps I dunno, hire Jim Henson to create some really elaborate puppets and prosthetics for the Koopa actors. It doesn't have much to offer as a Mario Bros. movie or as a movie, it's not particularly entertaining for a large portion of it.

Aside from basically having nothing to do with the SMB game (they even made them not brothers, I think to have a connection between Leguizamo and Samantha as orphans, but even that's stupid), it was a trainwreck of a film. The plot is awful, the dialogue worse, the humor forced, the pacing a pain. The actors in it can actually act, but the characters are so two dimensional you wouldn't know it. And this was a heavily pushed summer film when it came out. I saw it back in 93, and the audience left with a WTF look on their faces.
It was so awful I just rewatched it for the first time (the rifftrax version) with some friends, and even they agreed while the jokes were amusing, the movie was so bad it brought the jokes down, even though you know going in it was bad.
The script started off as an adult satire but was rewritten to be family friendly, which left many people involved unhappy with the final product.
