In some things, they have majority of the characters, Toad, Yoshi, Princess, King Koopa, etc etc. Kinda the same scenario..the brothers go fight Koopa to save princess , They jump high with special boots lol , You just have to see it..it was my favorite 90's movie growing up...kinda corny lol but I loved it!

There's a cool pipe sequence, bullet bill references, bob-ombs, mushrooms, so called goombas, sniffets in the form of trash men, and more. So there are definitely references. A woman dressed like a spiny, thwomp signs, a koopa cousin (rather than kid) named iggy. You get the picture. I still enjoy it and I'm 30. Production might have sucked for the actors and they changed so much but it's still an enjoyable movie

It has a lot of references to the games. But its not really like them. But looking back i don't know how the movie could have turn out any better. Unless it was Animated. We are talking about character that eats mushrooms that allows him to breath fire and kills turtles by jumping on there shells. And this was long before Mario had anything resembling a back story. The movie itself is o.k.. Its not a masterpiece. I wouldn't say its bad. As much i would say its very very mediocre. But It might be worth watching as an oddity of the 90's. And ive seen worse. Like the Double Dragon Movie.
