I loved this movie when I was younger and guess what? I still do & I'm 26! So what if it doesn't exactly follow the game? I thought they did a good job, and I love Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario & Luigi. This movie is cute, funny and I thought it did justice to the video game. Who cares if it wasn't exactly like the game,or isn't all about special effects, people take things so seriously. I mean get a grip haha.. All in all I think kids enjoyed it when it came out and will continue to like it even now. I know some people will probably disagree but hey it's just my opinion.
if you saw it as a kid, it has a nostalgia factor for you.
It's almost like somebody saw the first NES game and said, 'hey, let's make a little movie for the kiddies and we'll clean up at the box office!' They failed to realize that by 1993, playing Mario games had become a totally immersive experience. They had created an entire Mario world and legions of fans around the world. Do I dare compare the expectations of the fan base, to something as huge as those of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars or Harry Potter fans? Maybe not, but we are getting close. It should have been something epic, because there were millions of fans worldwide, expecting something better. Instead, we got something gritty and cheesy at the same time. Yeah, I realize they are just video games about plumbers fighting turtles and rescuing a princess. But imagine if the movie were made today, with the same amount of attention to detail and dedication to the original themes, that they put into movies like Batman and Spider man. I think it might be possible to create an immersive, magical, 3D world and possibly make a very good movie.
In an August 2007 interview with The Guardian, Bob Hoskins complained, "The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers." Bob should know a good live action fantasy film when he sees one. He played in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, back in 1988. That's how you make a great live action / animated fantasy film!
I haven't seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit since the 80s...I hope it still holds up and it's not nostalgia!
Super Mario Bros. I recall being bizarre, but still sort of fun and interesting. Watching it again though, the version I bought from Rifftrax, oh my gosh it was bad. Half of the movie doesn't even make any logical sense even though it's not doing anything complicated. And that's aside from how cheesy it is and how it has nothing to do with the games.
For some reason I can't really bring myself to hate it though...I'd probably give it a 2/5 star "don't like it" rating.
I don't think any of the actors should feel embarrassed (nor the puppeteers or anything), as they did a good job with it considering what they had to work with.
Sure hope Assassin's Creed is good...it's a blindingly obvious choice to tell stories in other mediums with, and the trailer doesn't look too bad, though any deviation from the series (like an Animus that...what, is like a holodeck or something?) is already driving me nuts.
I know it was not some big academy award winning blockbuster i thought it was a fun movie and you can't hate somebody for having a different opinion. I get that critics panned the movie but there are tons of people who liked this movie and honestly i do not listen to what critics say about movies
I grew up playing the videogames and I didn't see the movie until last year. Guess what? I still loved it. The movie did capture the basic themes: The princess is kidnapped, Mario and Luigi have to go rescue her, they get power-ups at different stages, and they encounter strange creatures on the way to the final boss. I think it's a great adaptation. I don't care if it didn't have Shy Guys or tunnel warps. Just look at it like it's its own thing.
Just because Bob Hoskins didn't like working on the film doesn't mean it's a bad film. It doesn't matter though, because I won't magically make you appreciate this film, and your opinion won't make me say "Yeah, you know what? It is a bad film!"
"people take things so seriously. I mean get a grip haha"
Exactly, they come to sites like IMDb and post threads with titles like "Why is everyone hating on this movie?" and project their own lack of a grip.
