Why is this film nothing like the video games?

The settings, characters and overall look of the film doesn't replicate the video games perfectly. I've read that originally the Super Mario Bros. movie was going to be animated, which this film would presumably be? But why isn't it?

It should have been animated. Because i don't see how they can do it Live Action. Unless they do it completely CGI World with live actors. But they wasn't possible in 1993.

Well, now that CGI technology has made significant leaps, maybe there should be a remake with all the characters as CGI, but in a real-world setting? (Like the Looney Tunes: Back In Action movie, where the Looney Tunes characters were CGI-animated with real-life actors.)

Trust me it's happening sooner or later. They're seriously talking about making a Tetris movie. So I'm gussing Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Zork, Pong are all on their way.

Wonder what a Tetris movie would be like. Blocks from outer space heading towards the Earth like meteors, and people have to line them up to obliterate them? Or maybe there's a building block competition to see who can build the world's tallest tower out of Tetris blocks?

And I think Nintendo was talking about plans to make a Zelda movie recently. Zork might work as a series of sci-fi/action-adventure movies, like Star Wars.

There actually was an animated Super Mario Bros movie released in Japan, 1986. Not much of a plot and only an hour long but its the closest you're ever going to get to a film-translation of the game. You can watch it on youtube (with subs) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjHyJ6mGfh4

I agree. A faithful adaptation would never work in a live action setting.

The Directors wanted to use the property and make something much different.

Usually it's the other way round - when video games are made out of movies, they're usually bad because the game programmers took too many liberties with the source material (i.e. the movie). Just look at the Back to the Future NES game, for example. The Angry Video Game Nerd did a couple of reviews on it, noting how it has almost nothing to do with the movie.

Well that was the problem here... The directors wanted to make something much different without the producers paying much attention.

I personally haven't seen the new Peanuts movie, but based on the trailers I think they can do wonders with the computer generated technology like that and make an amazing Super Mario Brothers film. Let's hope one day they make that attempt, I'd throw a hand down and say it will be a complete blast!
