shoes

at the begining of the movie when his partner gets shot and they get in the chopper, why does he cut his shoe lace?

I might have heard that you were supposed to do that when a soldier gets shot, but am not sure.

when you go into a combat situation where you could very well get killed you always keep one of your dog tags around your neck and one laced into your boot. That way when someone gets killed and it is a fast and furious situation where you can't bury the body it will be left behind to be identified once the hostile situation is taken care of. A long time ago the would have both around the neck and the CO or whoever was ordered to do so would rip both of the neck and pocket one and then place the other in between the teeth of the deceased.

This might not be true, but a Vietnam vet once told me that they started lacing tags into boots because a lot of times boobytraps hung in trees, and other explosions, would decapitate soldiers and their tags would be lost. To avoid being an unknown soldier and declared MIA, they laced a tag into their boot. Could be BS but it made sense at the time.

Also, I've read that jamming a tag between a corpse's teeth was a myth that came from te fact that the old embossing machines used to make the tags used a notch cut into the end of the tag to hold it in place while it was stamped. This notch was then said to have been included for the purpose of holding it in the teeth. Again, not really sure one way or the other.

Thanks for asking the question. I was curious about that myself.🐭
