I have no problem with the voyeurism theme of the movie -- despite all the sleazy stuff, it seems to come down on the side of maintaining privacy. My objection to it was that it's got a dumb sloughed-off plot point.
Slight spoiler: Sharon Stone is suspicious of two men as the possible murderer in a series of deaths in the building where she lives. At the end of the movie, one of them is revealed as being the murderer via a brief flash of him caught on illy Baldwin's secret videotape setup. But there's never any explantion of WHY the killer did what he did. It's as if the writer said well, we have to have somebody be the murderer, so let's throw a dart at the wall and see whose name we hit.
As a viewer, I felt ripped off. I wanted to know the how and even more the why.
I am sure that there was a known motiff. She had dumped him and he killed her in a jalous rage. Wasn't this the reason?
Throughout the movie, the killer clearly demonstrated jealousy at Stone's relationship with Baldwin. Hence an implied reason for killing is positioned in the plot.
That's just my view, but I thought it was fairly obvious (or how I read it). I guess thats the beauty of movies as they can be interpreted so many ways.
It is my personal cult film. It is not a good movie, but I like it, for some reason. I only wish they had stuck to the book. The book was great and explored base human desires; the identity of the killer in it also made MUCH more sense.
Although we discover it's Tom Berenger's character who throughs Naomi Singer off the balcony - look closely - that's the only murder he commits. For there are TWO killers in this film - and very interesting clues to match.
During the movie its revealed that the writer was impetent with naomi and that is why he killed her. Also contributing to the murder is baldwins affair with naomi. Many motives were clear just not fully explained.
I loved this movie. It was cute and very steamy.I loved william baldwins acting. The way he just oozed sex and mystique. The movie was very steamy but also had a great story.I was so glad it was not william baldwin who murdered naomi singer. The part I that made me mad was the elevator scene with the little girl and the "touchy"boyfriend if it was me I wouldve beat the s**t out of him.The ending made me dissapointed though.I thought it shouldve been better.I really did think after seeing the guy kill naomi singer that william baldwin and sharon stone wouldve stayed together. But thats just me Im a romantic.I genuinely thinked that he loved her.I loved it I hope I can find the dvd to it.
William Baldwin is a killer too. And actually, in the original script it called for Baldwin to be the killer all around and even when Carly Norris figures it out, she still sticks with him. A bizarre ending, and I'm glad it was changed. I think the ending displayed here is the sharpest and most brilliant ending imaginable.
