Restaurant Scene -- Fork and Spoon on Glass 55 minutes in?

I would love if someone could help my son, fiance, and me understand a scene in the movie. Tom Hanks runs out to a date a little under an hour in the movie, and while he's waiting for his date, there is a scene where he's playing with sugar cubes. If you look at this scene, you see that a fork and spoon are hovering horizontal near his water glass. When his date sits down, they fall down.

Can someone tell me what was up with this? We are trying to figure this out and feel like idiots.

The gene pool could use a little chlorine......

I also noticed that when I saw the film. I guess Tom Hanks' character was just bored as you can see from him piling up sugar cubes. I think we have to assume he knows how to do the floating cuttlery trick.. I'm pretty sure it's not relevant to the story anyway so no need to feel like an idiot.

It is relevent....he is an architect...a builder!!! It was a subtle nuance of the movie coming through....wake up people.

Why do people post a question on here and then when people respond don't bother to come back?
