A Shout-Out for Walter!

(after the umpteenth time of seeing this)

I think Walter has the 'best' quote of the movie. Not the "greatest"...as there are tons of snappy one-liners and heart-tugging set-ups. But the best, as in, the most insightful.

I'm referring to the one:
"Look, Annie... I love you. But let's leave that out of this. I don't want to be someone that you're settling for. I don't want to be someone that anyone settles for. Marriage is hard enough without bringing such low expectations into it, isn't it?"

The neat part I like about his role is that in no way is he a bad guy. He's an eminently decent, likable guy. It's out of his control, and he understands it. And maybe he's not going to fight, but he's not going to sell himself short, either.

Pretty good.

That's what I liked about Walter, too. There are too many movies where the current love interest is as unlikeable as possible, and the audience is beat over the head with how much of a jerk he/she is, and how it's such an obvious choice to pick the new one.

But they didn't do that with Walter. He was a kind, sweet guy who had a lot in common with Annie. I guess he just lacked that spark of magic. But it made him a sympathetic, realistic character.
