not only that, i believe the trivia says they actually turned the movie down. idiots. bet they regreat it now considering sleepless is one of if not the greatest rom com of all time.
shareI'm actually glad they did turn the role down. Meg Ryan is amazing and her chemistry with Tom Hanks is absolutely amazing! It's one of the things that made this movie as good as it is!
shareYes. There is NO WAY I would want Jodie Foster or Jennifer Leigh in this role, despite how much I love and respect their talents.
Kim Basinger wouldn't put much of a memorable stake on the character. Can Tom Hanks hook up with the airhead across the country?
Losing Julia for the role is kind of sad. I mean, why can't we get ONE great romantic comedy with Tom and Julia?? Larry Crowne is all we can get??
However, Meg and Tom proved once again that they can create real movie magic, even though they are not seen together in the movie for more than 10 minutes.
I doubt these women are regretting that they turned down that movie. They've all done very well themselves in many movies including some of the greatest romantic comedies. I grant that this movie is one of the best but it is not THE best.
shareAnything Michelle Pfeiffer did was gold in that era. She would have been great.

Basinger was offered the female leading role in the early script process, but turned it down because she thought the premise was ridiculous. She wasn’t wrong. Audiences didn’t care.share
Fallout: The role of Annie was originally offered to Julia Roberts, who turned it down. After Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jodie Foster declined as well, Meg Ryan landed the role. The pairing of Hanks and Ryan propelled the movie to major box office success and Ryan became the undisputed queen of rom coms.
Meanwhile, Basinger was starring opposite Val Kilmer in the box office flop, The Real McCoy. No doubt that Sleepless would have been a better choice. But then again, Basinger didn’t really pursue a career in romantic comedies. I have no doubt starring opposite Hanks would have been better for Basinger’s career than making a lame heist movie with Kilmer. But I don’t know that Basinger would have got the same career boost out of a rom com that Ryan did. Ryan was genetically engineered to make rom coms. Basinger’s DNA was more sultry than that.
Verdict: Missed opportunity
Nothing against Kim since it was her choice; but did she really think the script was any more ridiculous than the one for The Marrying Man which she starred in with ex-hubby Alec B. two years before?
Meg Ryan was made for this film anyway. None of the other ladies could have pulled it off as well or had the same chemistry with Tom Hanks and that is a fact.
I think Meg Ryan was perfect in this role. I like the other actresses considered, but this is Meg's role all the way.
