Question about the Male Stripper/Who F-ed Who/The Arrest

I love this movie, and I think Will Smith showed that he deserved the two oscar nominations later on even in this early role.

I just have a few curious points.

1. How did Paul manage to sneak a stripper into that apt through a doorman? There had to be someone guarding the back door as well.

2. In the horse carriage, who was receiving the rod?

3. At the end, why did the police not allow Flan and wife to accompany Paul? And with all of their wealth and circle of friends, its hard to believe they were never able to track down Paul. If Paul was really charged or indicted, they only need to follow Rick's girl friend to get to Paul.

reply

1. Doorman helped him earlier and thought he was bringing a friend up to the Kittredges because it was okay.

2. Don't quite understand that question, but I would assume it was Rick.

3. It's not standard procedure to let every Tom, Dick or Harry jump into the police car with a suspect. They didn't know Paul's real name so no one could help them. Paul wasn't arrested by the unit that was investigating Rick's death. He was arrested for something different. That is why the lieutenant couldn't help.

I always assumed it was oral sex as well...I can't see them doing much more in the back of a hansom cab. Will Smith often mentioned in interviews later his discomfort with playing a gay character. He has always been honest about his discomfort with scenes of physical affection between men and refused to kiss Anthony Michael Hall in one crucial scene...they shot the kiss in a way that you were unable to see their lips touch but the dubbing of the kissing sound made it very obvious that Smith isn't really kissing Hall.

No one knew who will Smith was? Um this movie came out in 93. He already had a couple of grammys and a prime time TV show.

Hey, I'm sure you've already heard this by now, but Will Smith has said more recently that he regrets not kissing Hall in the movie. At the time, he claimed that he had been advised by an accomplished actor (Denzel Washington) not to "...be kissing no man." Washington explained that while white audiences can separate an actor from the parts he plays, black audiences have a harder time doing so and would believe that because he kissed a man in a movie, that he must truly be gay. Being a member of that black audience, I was personally insulted by his remarks, because I know full well that an actor and the character he or she plays are two different people.

Smith realizes now that as an actor he has to be fearless and to be anything but cheapens the performance. Some of the senior cast members of his sitcom at the time teased him because he didn't fully commit to the character. He says now that if he had to do it all over again, he would put his trust in his director and play the part as scripted. I believe him and I don't think many people would deny that he has become quite the accomplished actor in his own right.

Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!

I think the real reason Denzel told him is cause Washington is homophobic. Early in his career he admitted to it but never made an issue out of it. I was angry that Smith refused to kiss Hall--the blocking of the scene was incredibly awkward. He SAYS he's come around and would kiss a guy now but I'll believe it when I see it.

Is Washington really homophobic? He never seems that way to me.

reply

Yeah he is. He admitted as much when he was in "Philadelphia". In one interview he said he had a problem with gay guys.

it was clearly Rick who was on the receiving end - Paul said "I want to f___ you" (Rick said I don't do things like that and Paul says that what makes it so wonderful) and when Rick told the story to his girl friend, he added, "He did and it was wonderful."

So Paul f______ Rick. (Paul's a clear top anyway, always in control; Rick is a bottom, willing to receive a new experience.)

In a way that is the whole movie: Paul screws others, puts them in situations they are not normally in, and they look back and think it was a good time and/or kill themselves, in other words, enjoyed the experience or felt devastated

paul is not a top. you see him on his back, legs in the air, when Ouisa discovers him with the hustler

Maybe he likes both.

Holding out hope for The Front Runner.

Why does the OP refer to the prostitute as a stripper?

reply

I've ridden in one of those hansom cabs. I don't think there is enough room for two full-grown men to have anal sex without one or both falling out. Paul did use the f-word when he made his overture to the other guy, but oral sex seems more possible to me.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
