Stockard Channing + Oscar Nomination = ?????
Why was Stockhard Channing nominated for an Oscar for this?
shareWhy was Stockhard Channing nominated for an Oscar for this?
sharebecause she acted well in it.
shareYeah; and it really shows her strengths as an actress but it's hard to tell because the other aspects of the movie aren't incredibly good since it was modeled more like the play. Also the fact that she rose above the weak transition and still managed to play the part brilliantly.

The end when she walked out. It showed not only the strangth of a charactor but the strength of a women. You could see how the whole thing changed her. You could just see it when she raised her head and walked down the street. That is the strength of a good actress. And a strong women.

Why wasn't Will Smith nominated?
shareStockard Channing was nominated for an Oscar for Six Degrees of Separation because she gave a simply marvellous performance in it. Her Ouisa Kittredge is a spoiled, affluent flake who slowly, gradually taps into unsuspected reserves of strength and humanity over the course of the film. Channing's performance was rich, subtle and multi-layered, and it's always a pleasant treat to see a middle-aged Hollywood actress who isn't Meryl Streep get a shot at a juicy lead role like Ouisa.
shareI totally agree, Stockard Channing was awesome here as she always is. I'm only surprised that she has never won an Oscar or gotten any other Oscar nominations apart from this movie. She should really have four or five nominations by now. One of the best and most underrated actresses around.
shareExactly, Lemonhed. Stockard is shockingly underrated by the Hollywood powers-that-be, and I agree that she should certainly have picked up a lot more than just the one Oscar nomination by now. Hell, she should already have won an Oscar, but then again so should Glenn Close, Annette Bening and many more. In general, theatre and television has been kinder in recognizing Stockard's acting genius than the Hollywood system has been: she has an amazing 12 Emmy nominations for her TV work (winning twice, for The West Wing and The Matthew Shepard Story), and five Tony nominations for her stage appearances (winning the Best Actress Tony in 1985 for the play A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg).
shareYou are so right Aquiliea. I had no idea Stockard had so many Emmy and Tony nominations. Meryl Streep certainly can't boast that distinction, can she? ;) 12 Emmy nods? Take that and shove it where the sun don't shine, Oscars!
shareLol! True that, Lemonhed.
shareSo glad I am not the only member of the 'Stockard Channing Appreciation Society.'
This is, in many ways, an incredibly difficult part to 'sell.' A character like Ouisa isn't a character most audiences would identify with, let alone warm themselves to: She is, by many tandards, brimming with unlikeable qualities that don't make her evil, but certainly not the kind of person an audience would identify with and get drawn into the story. She's a snooty rich art-as-snake-oil-salesman spoiled poser, essentially. Playing this kind of character on the outset is hard to do without turning audience against that character within the first 10 minutes, and ultimately 'abandoning' any emotional investment/interest in the film.
Channing infuses Ouisa with a sense of vulnerability that requires tremendous skill/talent to balance that character's otherwise offputting characteristics. She nurtures her character through a growth that fits both the situations that nurture it, and Ouisa's personality.
The character of Ouisa isn't a 'call girl with a heart of gold,' she doesn't require a 'gorgeous actress in a dressed down roll without vanity,' she isn't bordering on insanity. Ouisa is a very understated role that doesn't have much to 'knock one outta the park', in terms of showy acting, but Channing manages to do just that with her incredible 'emotional balancing act' that few actresses can manage with the deft skill Channing brings to everything she does.
In short: She freakin ROCKS! lol
I couldn't agree more, Lemonhed...Channing is, IMO, one of the five best actresses working in the business right now. She deserved this nomination and if it had been up to me, she would have gotten a supporting actress nomination for GREASE. This an actress who, when she steps in front of a camera, does no wrong.
share1993 must not have been a good year for actresses. Holly Hunter's one-note performance in the over-rated The Piano took the Oscar that year and the following year Jessica Lange's embarrassing performance in Blue Sky won. Stockard was no better or worse than those 2.
shareAgreed. This is a great performance by Channing who I've loved since The Girl Most Likely To. She is an actress with a consistent body of good performances and that makes her memorable.
Increase the Peace -release endorphins :^D
Because her performance was brilliant, that's why.
shareOld post, but honestly, the early to mid-nighties simply sucked, film wise.
With very few exceptions,(Miranda Richardson in Tom & Viv comes to mind), the Academy wins, much less the nominations, were selected on a best of the worst sliding scale.
That said, if the Academy was handing out consolation prizes, Channing was a worthy recipient. She's a great actress who's been historically overlooked. She was brilliant in Moll Flanders and I wish her Oscar nod would have led to more film roles.
