Are SA1/SA2 underrated because they both mock religion ?
Probably...
Just a thought.
I've never thought they mocked religion in these movies. It may be a different take on it, but even in the first one, although Deloris was very negative about the situation and nuns, but she came to love them and I always felt she came to respect the church.
shareNo. Neither movie was underrated because it mocked religion. Neither movie mocked religion. Were there reviews that said that they did?
The first one was underrated because some people, including movie critics, had trouble getting beyond some silliness in plot and characterization to find a funny, enjoyable movie. I didn't have that trouble, and I was not alone.
The second was not underrated. The critics strained to find anything that pleased them. I am not so charitable.

They never mocked religion at all. What they mocked was the strictness that went with the religious order. Not religion itself.

I agree, I thought the church and religion itself came off well in these films. Growing up it made me feel more connected to faith watching these films and listening to the gospel music, rather than disconnected
shareI think Sister Act 2 in particular was underrated because it WAS very formulaic and riddled with plot holes. It was like "The Mighty Ducks" of singing (although, don't get me wrong...I really loved this film and it's predecessor).
If anything, it was actually pretty kind to religion...particularly to the life of nuns (go look up some experience of ex-nuns on youtube if you want to hear some horror stories).
It probably ruffled a few feathers of some old school Catholics, who resented the changes brought in by Vatican II. If anything, these films really were cheerleading for the Vatican II style reforms...and the conflict between traditionalism and the more progressive style that was brought in at that time. I think this theme is evident in both films.
I don't think religion itself was mocked at all. If anything, it was actually made more appealing by these films.
