Annie Ross' character works in a 3rd rate night club in L.A.
she isn't supposed to be good. Her character represents that huge population of delusion in L.A.
She was never good enough to move beyond and she holds on to her past-
as for Nashville, some of those songs are pretty great (hell, "I'm Easy" won the oscar, and most of Ronnee Blakely's songs are great).
But again, that movie is about country music and was shot/released in '75 when country music was going through a terrible transition and most of it was garbage. (most of it still is).
