At first I hated his character because he was such a douche and I thought Tim Robbins was overacting a bit, but as the movie progressed I grew to love his character almost as much, if not more than, Robert Downey Jr's character.

Just watched the film for the first time last night and that was exactly my reaction to him. Couldn't believe what a knob he was, and really despised him. Then when you begin to understand the weird, complex but ultimately functional relationship he has with his wife he becomes more and more likeable. His character doesn't even really change; you just reach a better understanding of him.

Exactly. I was appalled at how rotten a character he was at first, but as the movie progressed he became hilarious and endearingly awful

Once you find out that his wife was not as innocent as she seemed in the beginning, it was easier to understand their relationship.

Hey, regardless if he was lying cheating dirtbag, he brought Suzy home and that's what mattered.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

And of course he threatened to cite Huey Lewis for an open container. LOL

The guy is absolute gold. His performance is dark comic genius.
