This is a recent Australian film by director Ray Lawrence, based on the short story "So Much Water So Close to Home." It stars Gabriel Byrne as Stuart Kane and Laura Linney as Claire, is set in the town of Jindabyne, New South Wales. It's a bit slow moving but its worth seeing.

Well, the film's credits explicitly mention Raymond Chandler, so no, it's not a coincidence. Though it's not a remake either, it goes a lot deeper into the characters than the Short Cuts version did.
