Jack Lemmon and The Egg Trick? Was that real and has anyone tried it?

shareLemmon's character was fascinating... Why did he creep away at the end? Does he have a really hard time opening up with his son? Sharing feelings, offering support?
I felt throughout that he really WANTED to share his son's pain and to empathise with his plight (which is why he stuck around the hospital) but couldn't actually do more than hang around for a while, as though he suffered from some kind of emotional issue.
I agree, he kind of did crawl away at the end.
I don't know why exactly, but I just don't think he could deal with the death of his grandson who he never knew, he also didn't know his son that well anymore either and I guess he felt like he didn't deserve to be part of the family, but I could be wrong about that.
