I may have missed something but why did Tim Robbins' character decide to go and get Suzie back after abandoning her?

To please the kids, bring about some domestic peace and perpetrate another spectacularly heroic act. Very fond of the self image as this guardian of the civilians as he was (as best evidenced by his ridiculous antics during the earthquake).

I thought it was because when he saw Stormy's shadow in Betty's window, it further convinced him that she was lying about seeing her half-sister...so he decided to be more present with his own family, and treat them better.
