Anyone know exactly what Carver stories are portrayed?

I'm a fan of Carver, but certainly haven't read everything. Prior to seeing this, I wanted to read the specific stories portrayed... Can anyone name some?

I have the book too but I cant remember the names. The only one I remember is 'Will you please be quiet please?'. I do believe that is the Matthew Modie/Julianne Moore storyline.

"A Small Good Thing," is one of the short stories by Raymond Carver which is in the Movie.

It is the story line with actor's: Andie MacDowell and Bruce Davison and the angry Baker played by Lyle Lovett.

Neighbors (Downey Jr. Story), They're Not Your Husband, Vitamins, Will you Please be Quiet, Please?, So Much Water So Close to Home (dead body), A Small Good Thing, Jerry and Molly and Sam, Collectors, Tell the Women We Are Going (I think this is the beating the girl to death with a rock one), Lemonade (which is a poem).

These stories appear throughout various Carver collections but they are all together under the title of well Short Cuts.

I really do not remember which is to which story - as far as I recall from when I read it quite a few are fairly vague and the Annie Ross / her daughter story (the singer - cello player) was made up for the film - probably as a better way to connect the characters and the themes/moods (which I think really works well - go Altman). I know its based on Carver's stories but its really fascinating how he really transformed these short stories that into a interconnected plot. I mean I also love Carver as a whole (I'd suggest getting Where I Am Calling From as a great compilation of Carver stories).

Hope that helps :).

They're Not Your Husband was the Earl & Doreen (chauffeur & waitress) story. Much different than the Carver story, in which the man gets obsessed over his wife's weight and conjoles her into starving herself to get thin.

A Small Good Thing was the Casey (child getting hit by a car & killed, parents confront baker) story. Pretty similar to the actual story if I remember correctly.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is about the doctor and his wife and their awkward night getting drunk with the couple.

Short Cuts: Selected Stories by Raymond Carver with an intro. by Robert Altman was published in September 1993 by Vintage Contemporaries, a division of Random House, Inc. It is still in print and readily available. The stories in this volume are the ones that served as the basis for the movie: "Neighbors," "They're Not Your Husband," "Vitamins," "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?" "So Much Water So Close to Home, "A Small, Good Thing," "Jerry and Molly and Sam," "Collectors," "Tell the Women We're Going," and "Lemonade" (a poem.) To add confusion, Altman changed the names of ALL the characters from the short stories to the movie. The are numerous changes between the stories and the film versions of those stories. Over all, I consider the short stories better than the film, which is, in my opinion, Altman's worst film.
