Dickon's future

People here and elsewhere keep saying, "Dickon is common, he's going to be a laborer, he won't end up with Mary or probably even stay friends with her and Colin..." Nothing against laborers, but Dickon is too awesome and has too much to give to society not to make something more of himself. What I can see happening is Archibald, after seeing how much good Dickon did for his son, offering to fund his education so he can become a veterinarian. (Or a people doctor, but Dickon would probably prefer to work with animals.)

What a wonderful thought.

Btw, people who were truly talented with animals did well for themselves back in those days, especially if they were attached to a large estate. Being Head Groom or Head Coachman was quite honorable. Or someone could be the owner of their own farm, perhaps renting the land from the landowner.

So, even without special favors, someone as talented as Dickon would probably have done well.
