the same is true all over the World though there are women Grandmasters such as the Polgar Sisters and quite a few women Champions at all levels of the FIDE system from Grandmaster downwards to Juniors.

The real reason (not the previous poster's sexist comments) is that Chess Mentality is extremely competitive to the point of animosity and that runs counter to the ladies outlook for positive social interaction. Women especially intelligent women tend not to look down or be in contempt of other players to succeed.

Chess appeals more the masculine attitude of Winner Takes All, Compromise is still LOSE/LOSE & the use of devious cunning to wipe out the opposition. For women to succeed at Chess, they have sacrifice and put aside their positive & altruistic tendancies and be quite aggressive.

I a woman who played chess in the tournaments as a girl, and won quite a bit. I think my femininity had something to do with it; most boys got nervous when they saw they had to play a girl. There were so few of us at tournaments!

I remember in one tournament (a local, smaller one), there was only me and one other girl. The final match, and all the boys had been eliminated! LOL So it was me against her with all the boys standing around watching.

Interesting observation. I played competitive Chess throughout high school and I never saw a girl at a tournament. I would say the main reason for this is that between the ages of 12 and 18 (the formative years for a young Chess player), girls are under tremendous pressure to conform. The kids on the Chess team are never the popular kids or even the kids a girl wants to be seen with. That's certainly the way it was when I was younger.

But I think there is more to it than that. Even the smart girls who were social outcasts as well never played Chess. It probably goes to the same reasons that women are decidedly under-represesnted in science and engineering. I think its more about the way girls are socialized at a young age than anything chemical in the brain.

This is exactly why women should not be allowed in the military.

That, and the rape thing.

And no, I'm not trolling.

^ Of course, if I WERE trolling, that's exactly what I would have written.

It's more about how the brain works. Men have 30% more testosterone than women which gives them better spacial representation (that is why women can't read maps very well or park a car) and they can mentally see objects in 3D.
You also need a high abstract intelligence and women score better at the emotional intelligence. There are not many women mathematicians either.
The cultural factor plays a role too. Chess is viewed more as a man's thing. Still, to this day sexual stereotypes influence the way man and women live their lives. Women have to be good mothers and good wives and their career should be one that is more appropriate for a woman. Parents take their little girls to dance classes not to chess classes.
