Father Cavanaugh’s Absence

Just wanted to say that I wish I could’ve seen the priest’s reaction to Rudy getting accepted to ND. We don’t see him again after he and Rudy talk in the sanctuary. You know, the “There is a God...and I’m not Him” bit.

After watching this a million times I realized I would’ve liked to have seen his reaction to hearing the news the day after.

It's kinda/sorta hinted that Father Cavanaugh may have had some influence in the board's decision to finally accept Rudy. If he did, he would have already known.

Where was that hinted at?

reply

Not in the dialog certainly.

When Father Cavanaugh left Rudy for the last time at the church after the "I'm not Him" speech, he stopped and turned back to look at Rudy while Rudy was praying. It was clear that *if* he could have had any influence with the ND admissions board, he would have made at least one more impassioned plea on Rudy's behalf to the admissions board.

The very next scene is Rudy getting and reading the acceptance letter.

What we don't know of course is if he had any influence at all, which is why it's a kinda/sorta hint. Still, Father Cavanaugh seemed to be well regarded and respected at Notre Dame.

My wife thought the same way as I did at that scene, but there's no direct mention of whether Father Cavanaugh helped or not.

I get that.
