If Rudy wanted to go to Notre Dame so bad...

He probably should have gotten better grades in high school. Given that it was his lifelong dream to go there, he probably should have known that you need good grades to get in. When his high school teacher told him he didn't have the grades for Notre Dame, he wasn't stepping on Rudy's "dreams", he was just being honest. We don't have control over our physical size or natural athletic abilities, but we can control how well we do in school.

He tried to get better grades, but it was difficult with him having yet undiagnosed Dslyexia

He had dyslexia. Tough to get good grades when you have trouble reading.

Baby can you dig yo man?

Congratulations to Rudy for getting accepted into Notre Dame despite his poor high school academic performance, limited sports talent and learning disability.
A relative of mine graduated in the top 10% of his high school class, was a member of a state champion sports team at his school, and had no learning disability. Yet he was rejected by Notre Dame.

reply

So what? The only thing that we can sympathize about your relative is that he didn't get in being top 10% in his class.

Being a member of a state champion sports team doesn't mean anything if your relative wasn't an integral part of the team or a standout athlete. And you're saying him not having a learning disability should've had him automatically accepted?

Talk about being sore.

Well, for many many students in high school one dreams of the grandiose. I too was a dreamer in high school and not exactly well motivated. Many just can't seem to grasp the importance of high school, I sure didn't. Rudy may have done much better had he been encouraged and motivated. Motivation sometimes doesn't come until much later in life.
My downfall in High School was math. But, some twenty years later, I did graduate summa cum laude from our local State University with a degree in Computer Science which was ALL mathematics, learned to love Calculus. It's all about motivation and the desire to succeed.
Rudy badly wanted to play football for Notre Dame but that was just dreaming. Apparently Rudy did not self motivate and discover for himself what he needed to accomplish while in High School until it was too late. And, there was apparently no one at that Catholic High School to assist and counsel Rudy so he could realize his dream.

EXACTLY he seems so motivated in the movie, yet he obviously did not put the effort in to get good grades. Ohh, he wants to go to Notre Dame so bad, since when ? This afternoon ? This movie is pure pretentious crap.

Rudy is/was much like the story of Patron Saint John Viennay. (sp)
His grades weren't that great, and he flunked out of Seminary multiple times.
He is the Patron Saint of Seminarians. I was in Seminary for the Priesthood for 2 years, and watched this movie a lot. Academics were never a strength for me. I was lucky to pull a C average. Rudy was one of the movies we would watch a lot especially when we would have people visiting the Seminary to decern the Priesthood.

reply

I agree but he had a learning disability that was undiagnosed.

What was done was done. The film mostly shows his life after high school. Plus he wanted to play football there.

Even if Rudy had the grades to get into Notre Dame, there was no way his Dad could have afforded to pay for it, or would have if he could. College wasn't as necessary then as it is now, and the Rutigers definitely didn't think it was for them, especially a school like Notre Dame. The only reason he did give him some money when he did go was because he knew how devastated Rudy was when his friend died, and there was no way he would go back to working at the mill.

And Rudy wasn't motivated enough to make the grades in high school, how do you think he would have done trying keep up with Notre Dame, try out for football, and work in order to pay for it. When he was older he was able to because he understood the importance of school, and he knew this was his last chance to accomplish his dream.

Also I think Rudy only dreamed about playing for Notre Dame, not actually going to school there, which is kind of necessary to play there.
