Why is this movie rated R?

Well,it's undeniably rated R for violence. The film is not constantly violent,but there are some quite bloody scenes in the film + there is also some sexual content and some coarse language. Where I'm living,in Montreal (Quebec),Canada, the film was even rated 18+. It's not a gorefest,but it is certainly not appropriate for children.

Yea, agreed - any time someone cuts off their own arm, it gets an R rating!
Plus, Lena Olin was '2 Sexy' for a PG rating!

lots of swearing, Lena Olins breasts, and quite a bit of violence, though some is just implied, like the arm cutting scene (Lena's arm, they actually show her cut off Juliette's).
