One of the most important scenes is missing!

Not without it's flaws, I continue to find this film a great nod to film noir. Oldman and Lena are both spot on. The biggest disappointment in re-watching this film was that the scene that has Mona cutting her arm off with the power saw was missing. One can certainly argue that it was (as originally intended) a bit over the top, however, I believe that (as portrayed in the original) we get a feel for just how psychopath this woman truly is. If nothing else, the missing scene creates confusion over Mona's suddenly armless body. Does anyone have any information on why this scene was ultimately cut for the DVD, or whether this film is available in Director's Cut?

reply

I have no idea why this has been cut and am also disappointed to find out its the same in the UK!

I always thought I dreamed the power saw sequence. All these years and I was right. I wonder what else got cut from the DVD?

Yep its been cut in the Australian DVD version also, and I always remembered that scene being one of my favourite scenes as it shows just how crazy she (Mona) really was, its disappointing that its missing, why would they remove it for?
Must locate an old VHS version like the one I watched way back when.....

As great as that moment is, it really doesn't make sense. She'd have been better off just lopping off a few of the other chick's fingers and making sure the prints and such were all burned beyond recognition. It would have made more sense if she also cut up the rest of the girl's body. Otherwise it looks suspicious that just the one arm has been severed.

How the hell do they get around this later, though, when she's got the prosthetic arm? You can't just leave it out of the movie, then it's totally unexplained how her arm is suddenly missing.

reply

She had been shot in the arm by Jack. It seems reasonable to assume that it was irreparably damaged and that's why she cut it off higher up.

All these years of watching/loving this film, and I never knew about the missing scene. I always thought she took advantage of the fact that Jack shot her in the arm -- irreparably, as man in oil said... and so she cut it off to use it for the body replacement. Anyway, I also agree with other posters that Lena Olin was fully psychopathic without having to see her cut off her own arm.

Hmmmmm.... interesting.

I think you explained the answer yourself. It would be too gory to show her actually cutting her arm off. Would you feel put off if Peter Medak decided to show that? Lena Olin did a great job showing Mona as a psychopath. Mona ranks up there with Norman Bates as one of the creepiest baddies in the movies.

Are you referring to the Region 1 version? I'm dismayed to hear it's edited too. I just bought the Region 4 version, only to find it butchered beyond belief. The nudity is missing, most of the swearing dubbed over with pathetic replacements like "hell" (unforgivable sacrilege of Wincott's classic delivery) and whole lines of dialogue are even excised! Needless to say, I binned the feeble disc with due disgust.

Looks like I'm sticking to my VHS copy until an uncut DVD is released.

It is on Showtime Extreme Wed.Dec12 at 10;05 PM.My DVD recorder will be taping it.I hope it is the uncut version. When I watch it I will get on this board and tell you if it was cut out.

I just watched it on Showtime, and there was no scene with Mona and the power saw. It just shows the scene where he shoots her in the arm, she escapes with the money through the windshield, etc. Then her next scene shows her strapping on the prosthetic arm. I guess they just expect you to assume she had to have her arm amputated because of the gunshot wound. I vaguely remember the power saw scene when I first saw the movie years ago. Seems strange they would cut that out - doesn't seem any worse than the other gory scenes.

I watched it Friday night. I was disappointed it was cut out. When they cut something out you never know if other scenes were cut out. I thought pay stations like Showtime,HBO,Cinemax and TMC show all there movies uncut. Sadly I was wrong. Here I am paying to get all these stations just to find out they cut scenes from movies.

"I guess they just expect you to assume she had to have her arm amputated because of the gunshot wound."

Such a slender woman wouldn't have too thick an arm to start with. A gunshot wound would probably render her arm useless even after proper surgery.

And since she's wanted fellon, she would not have access to a proper surgeon (gunshot wounds always get reported if you go to the hospital). That means she probably ended up at some mob-connected vet or something, who could do little but cut it off clean and bandage her.

So I think it was necessity rather than choice.

But she was clever enough to use it to her advantage. Although one might wonder if a coroner would be fooled. I mean, a severed arm found in a fire ?

1) Her prints would be useless. So why would they assume the body was hers to begin with ?

2) The coroner must be suspicious as to WHY the arm was severed (and quite cleanly, I might add).

3) What about the other hand ?

Or did I miss something here ?

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.
