Good movie
It's not "Last of the Mohicans or anything like that but it's still a decent film. I like the team of Snipes and Connery, they were rather interesting.

I agree with you, it was a good movie I gave it a 7/10.
Plot had some holes in it, but anything with Connery is generally good (hes that good in my books)
What is it that people do not understand about this film? Japanese culture meets USA foreign paranoia--A hell of a movie.
There is another reality...NEVERWHERE
What I don't understand about this film is how it managed to so completely butcher the novel it was based on.
Rising Sun as written by Michael Crichton is a provocative, shocking expose on how the United States has allowed Japan to take over far too much of its economy, using a thrilling murder mystery as a framing device. It is probably one of the most important American novels of 1990's, warning us in no uncertain terms that Americans must adapt to the warlike climate of modern international business or face disastrous consequences.
Rising Sun the movie focuses far, far too much on the murder mystery, and while this makes for a watchable if not necessarily good film, it misses the point that the original Rising Sun made. As for the cast, Connery and Snipes were chosen to put people in the seats, and that's about it. Neither was exactly made to play the roles of John Conner and Peter (or in the movie, Web) Smith. Keitel is perfect as Tom Graham, however.
As for "Japanese culture meets USA foreign paranoia," please read the book, or re-read it. There's a great deal more to the equation than foreign paranoia.
I agree. It didn't even feel the same as the book. Definitely a less ominous and mysterious feel in the movie. I also agree with the casting. I would have never imagined the characters to be Connery and Snipes. I didn't need to see Connery pretend to know Japanese, and say it with his thick accent.
The book, on the other hand, is incredible. See Crichton's list of references and you'll see the hard work he put into it (same with his other novels).

The beginning was kind of like the book, then it started to drift off, and when it was said who was the real murderer, it was like completely different than the book. Also when Eddie was killed.
shareSome poster has said that John Connor is actually African-American in the book as he called himself a nig ger (p.371) Though I don't think so Id like to hear others opinions.
Detective: "You're gonna burn for this, Angel."
Harry Angel: "I know...in Hell."
