at the beginning when the asian detective is examining the corpse right on the desk in the office, she said that a japanese man raped her. it was the senator, an american who raped her, and a japanese man killed her.
Actually, you're incorrect. In the movie, the Asian detective/pathologist doesn't tell Connor and Smith that the semen and pubic hair are from an Asian until they return to the station after talking to Eddie at the party. That only proved she had sex with an Asian man recently. She had sex with Eddie before the party. It made it that much easier for Nakamoto to frame him. Senator Morton didn't rape her. She was a "gasper," someone who enjoyed erotic asphyxiation. In the book, a Japanese man killed her. However, in the movie, the killer was changed from Ishiguro (called Ishihara in the movie) to the American lawyer Bob Richmond.
I just saw this movie again yesterday, and I agree with the original poster. The lady at the crime scene did say a Japanese pubic hair was found and that the sexual predator was Japanese.
Actually you're both wrong...in the movie the forensic pathologist says "there is evidence of past cervical trauma that could indicate forced intercourse" or something like that....based on the masochism level of Cheryl she probably enjoyed pseudo-rape which the pathologist would confuse with rape...she notes later that the evidence "points to a japanese perp"...watching this movie now I noticed this part was rather poorly done...if it was modern no one would overlook the fact that the senator's DNA would be there as well...there would be seminal fluids, fingerprints on the woman's neck that would not be Eddie's, skin filaments would be under Cheryl's fingernails from the senator's skin and any other residual fall off. But I guess for the time it wasn't the specifics that were important...the chick got murdered...that's good enough...I personally loved this movie...thought it was a great whodunit...though a part that confused me that was never explained is when Eddie is killed by Ishihara's goons, Webb runs up to Eddie's body then prepares to fire at the escaping car but is struck in the back by 2 bullets which according to the placement of all characters in the film could only have come from Captain Connor...I still can't figure this out...did Connor shoot Webb in the back??? and why??? so, yeah....

It probably was Connor, who shot Webb. My theory is, that he was shot for his own protection. The guys that killed Eddie were pro's. The gunning-down could also be used to put up a smoke screen to confuse the "bad guys". Just my theory.
Over the hills of slain a hideous shape appeared: a horseman, tall, hooded, cloaked in black
This scene was one of many that made no sense. Connery is a Lee Van Cleef-style sharpshooter as well as a ninja who can put grown men to sleep in a split-second with a simple nerve touch? A person can still get organ and bone injuries despite the vest.
You gotta keep in mind that Smith is telling the story to the cops and could've simply made that part up, like he when he lied right afterward about not knowing where to find Conner.
