Japanese culture in a sake cup
In the bar scene, both Connery and Mako move and, more importantly, breathe at the same time. This is "haragei" or "belly art" or "belly talk", a big deal in personal interactions amongst Japanese. When the American hustler makes point about the Fairchild deal, the Japanese next to him makes supporting grunts and noises; this is "aizuchi", the interjections that show that you are listening, without interruptions. I liked how the tough guys bow to Mako, who
returns the gesture.
Of course, Mako and Connery are a little too close when bowing, and Connery's finger-pointing is wrong. Still, a cute scene.
