Tia Carrere as mixed race/hapa/afro-japa nese

Hahahaha.

I certainly was shocked when that bit came out. She doesn't look black, japanese, or mixed with either of the two. It's amazing how mixed filipino people, or just mixed race asian and mixed whites, get used to play other races--latinos, whites, native americans, and now even mixed black/japanese folks.

and on the flip side, mixed race blacks play prettier blacks in a lot of older HW movies and obviously recent ones. and then famously david carradine playing asian. hahahaha.

It's very interesting indeed to see how race is represented and the bodies they chose to represent race.

the OP is absolutely correct. when i heard her say she was mixed black/japaneses, i thought "she does not look like she is made up from either of those races"

I have two cousins with the same parents: Dutch father, Filipino mother. One of my cousins has blond hair and blue eyes, the other one has almost black hair and brown eyes. One has very pale skin and one has very dark skin. They don't even look related, yet both came from the same parents and the same mixed heritage. Who is to say what someone should look like, based on their parentage? Genes add up in different ways for everyone. My blond cousin does not look Filipino. Is he any less Filipino than his sister? No. So, saying someone does not look like the race they say they are is not a fair statement. It could actually be seriously offensive to someone. My aunt used to get asked if she was the babysitter when she went anywhere with my cousin. No one could believe that child was hers. It's very rude to make assumptions like that.

My mom's cousin (we're black) was stationed in Okinawa and had since settled in Japan and started a family with a Japanese woman, and from little I've seen of their kids, Tia isn't so far off.

Also, they gave her braids in the movie, which I think was done to highlight this fact, but it looked a little silly.

I must say, I was thinking the exact same thing. There is absolutely no way she looks Japanese or afro-japanese in this film. Just no way.

Just watched the movie again. Maybe she doesn't look mixed race/japa/afro-japanese. But I will say she looks gorgeous.
