Saw part of this last night

I saw some of Posse last night on TV. I remember way back when it came out, thinking it might be interesting, given the advertised fact that a lot of cowboys in the Old West were actually black.

Unfortunately, what I saw from this movie seemed rather weak. The dream/imagination sequences looked cheap - like they put the actors on a set with a black background and spotlight, lit some smoke, and popped a brown lense over the camera.

It seemed like after this, Mario Van Peebles kind of went away. I began to like his work way back with Sonny Spoon, but I wasn't really impressed by that movie where he plays a bald machine-solder (can't remember the name). Sometime in the 1990s (I'm guessing the late 90s) I read a short interview with him where he said that he didn't want to live life with the philosophy of "having" things, but rather "doing" - hence, I believe he had done some international travelling. It was an interesting line and I've remembered it ever since.

I've been a Mario Van Peebles fan since I was a kid. I don't remember which was first, but I was impressed with his performances in Jaws 4 and Heartbreak Ridge.

I never really got into Sonny Spoon. I also liked his role in Highlander The Final Dimension. New Jack City was probably his greatest creation. That movie singlehandedly made the movie careers of Wesley Snipes and Ice-T.

I was lukewar on Posse. I thought it was OK, but not really great.

Most recently I liked the movie Sweetback. He's a talented actor/director and I'm especially impressed by the fact that he's not a media whore like a lot of other actors. He does his thing, markets his movies and then disappears until the next project comes along.

I can't remember enough of this movie to honestly critique it ro rate it but the fact that I remember it well enough to come post on its site should speak for something. I may rent it again one of these days.

Bottom line, the only parts I liked were the Spanish-American War sequences in Cuba at the start, if only b/c its an important American conflict that usually gets passed over in under 5 minutes in school, & really never gets much movie play as compared to WW2 or even the Civil War.
