Dermot Mulroney's JP is so sweet and so hot !!!!!!!

This character is laid-back, like a lot of his roles. But very sexy. Man!!!! This guy is a beauty - bearded or clean shaven, and plays a perfecly likeable, subtle, very romantic, and sexy boyfriend. BIGTIME!!!
Kudos to Mr Mulroney.

(and be still, my beating heart!)

A friend of mine told me about this movie and how sexy he was in it. She was right!

I've always thought he was really good looking.

That being said, however, in this movie I preferred Gabriel Byrne for her love interest, even though it was doomed and not to be.

Well I respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more! She and JP were having such a fun time together, and it was healthy. It created good dramatic tension to have Gabriel Byrne also falling for her, but it was more effective left unrequited.
JP represented everything that was good.

I do like Gabriel - saw him in a play in NY one time and sat on the 2nd or 3rd row and it was a small intimate play, so he was soooo right there! He was good...always intense. He looks eerily like a boyfriend I had many years ago..

But he's no Derm ; )

Sorry, I think JP was a much better match for her. He provided normalcy to her life as well as an escape from her profession. Gabriel is a great actor and is attractive but he doesn't hold a candle to Dermot. Besides he was too old for her and she wanted to be rid of her past, he was a very big part of that. Nope JP was a much better choice.

reply

Agreed! JP is the one for Nina/Claudia. I like Gabriel Byrne too, but I felt he was more of a father figure/mentor (albeit with a little bit of sexual tension), rather than a lover. JP and Claudia had something very sensual. Love the scene with the ravioli. As usual Becky and Marika have it right, IMO.

I have to disagree. I like Gabriel Byrne very much but the character of Bob was not a good match for Claudia/Nina. JP was so very GOOD for her. He loved her and encouraged her to try and get beyone her past, even though he didn't know her whole story. He just knew she was haunted by something and it hurt him that she was so troubled and couldn't share it with him.

IMO, Dermot has no equal in the looks or acting departments, and I always want his character to get the girl. But all that aside, the character of JP was a better future for her than Bob. Bob was too much a part of what she was in a former life and needed to break away from.

Wow! Excellent points, ladies.
Derm rules :-)
Glad I'm not alone on this one!!!
Much Love to Mary, Faithy and Cathy, my Derm compadres. . .

; )

PS - BTW, yes, Faith, the ravioli scene is off the charts!!!! Must have been what my friend Trish (another online buddy) was slyly thinking about...knowing I would really swoon over that scene, since I mentioned being a big Dermot Mulroney fan. Pret-ty darn yummy...

you're soo right this is the first movie i watched during my Mulroney craze phas! He's soooo sweet in this movie
BUT I'm not feeling the unibrow too much lol

he's damn sexy regardless

"fly, you fools"

reply

Ha! you're too funny! But that very light, wispy unibrow doesn't bother me AT ALL!!!! :D

I love JP - he is sweet but not a pushover. He said, "for now."
He wasn't gonna take it forever...

And even at the end he wasn't completely broken. He was strong, in a quiet way. I loved that.

Anyway, I agree - "he's damn sexy regardless" !!!!! in every way. ; )

Dermot Mulroney seemed very petite in this movie. Barely bigger than Bridget Fonda but not whimpy. He's definitely one of those actors who get better looking as they age.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

reply

He was beautiful at that age too !!!! I have met him several times briefly because his band plays in LA.
He is indeed a slender-boned man but not exactly petite. Very masculine and gentlemanly. quite glowing and handsome in person.
it's very clear why he "prints well" on film when you see him up close. he just glows....that's the best way to describe it... he's a beautiful man in every way.

reply

I actually hated him and wish death upon him. He was a fragile little girl throughout the whole movie, talking about his 'feelings' and what not. He was a wimpy little bitch that I'm disappointed to see that he didn't end up dead at end of the movie. I really wanted to see him die though. Kept pressuring her to give up info that she wasn't ready to give up yet. Not to mention he acted like a complete metrosexual bitch when those guys tried to rob them. He just stood back and watched his girlfriend beat the hell out of those guys and didn't even remotely help. Too bad he didn't die in the movie. That would have been a great ending to his character.

PS...

I loved it when she curses his ass out for asking too many question at the dinner table with Bob. It would have been a lot better if she had slit his throat right then. It would have been a perfect end to his character.

LMAO are you serious? He was so annoying in this!! He asked so many questions and expected a response ASAP I thought he was going to cry if he didn't get his answer. He felt smothering and didn't give her any space when it came to asking who she was. I mean no offense but if some women are into that it's no wonder so many are single.

reply

Agree...he was a whiny, insecure biaatch.

But hey, at least he had a great job......

To be fair, the part was written that way in the original as well.
