It is only hinted at in the movie, can anyone let me know if he was gay or not?

It was beyond "hinted at" in the movie. You have to actually 'watch' the movie again, don't skip to 'good parts' He is clearly gay, clearly! Even Denzel's Character had thoughts about becoming gay...

It was not hinted at. During the scene where the guys were sitting in the bar watching the news, the news people were asking a whole lot of questions, including, "Are you gay?" To which Andy replies, "I don't see how that's any of your business. But yes, I am."

Of course he was gay - he stated he was gay to a TV camera and to a court, referred to antonio banderas as his "partner" and contracted the disease by having sex with a man in a cinema.
