How did the Assassin know about Gavin?

Gavin Vereek ~ the lawyer for the FBI ~ went to New Orleans for Thomas Callahan's memorial. The assassin "Kamal" also went to New Orleans but to kill Darby Shaw.

Previous to the above, I didn't notice anything in the movie indicating that the bad guys or Kamal knew in advance that there was any connection between Darby and Gavin, NOR did they know that Gavin was going to New Orleans, NOR did they even know about Gavin's involvment at all. Darby called Gavin only from different hotel rooms so the bad guys could not have traced it.

When and How did Kamal get information on Gavin and his connection to Darby so he'd know to bug Gavin's hotel room in advance and hide in the closet?

Vereek gave the Pelican Brief he was given by his good friend Callahan to his boss who then spread it around. Undoubtedly Vareeks name was at the bottom of a memo that was attached to the Brief and it is not unlikely that he would have mentioned that he got it from a friend. The front of the Brief has Darby's name on it as well as who she was giving it to....we see that early on. One can also presume that there was a leak somewhere along the way as we can easily imagine someone of Matteice's position, which is placed high enough that he can call for the assassination of two Supremes and know that his Buddy the President will nominate replacements to his liking, being in a position to have spies in a lot of gov`t organizations. Thus, assuming that Matteice is made aware of the Brief, the names associated with it, and who is passing it around he can then track the individuals and have them killed at will. Are there plot holes or lapses.... of course. It is a movie after all. The plots around Kamal are not them.

OK thanks that's a good theory as a response to my query but it seems like your theory completely hinges on this one point:

Undoubtedly Vareeks name was at the bottom of a memo that was attached to the Brief ...
I missed that in the movie ~ when/where exactly was that shown...?
