Denzel and Julia...

Why there isn't the (natural) kiss?

reply

Why???? Because a little thing called Interracial. A thing that doesn't fly too well in America. It's sad, but it is true.

reply

If that were true, then no movies would have interracial sex/romance. But, of course, there are many films that do, both before AND since this film.

reply

That is absurd and patently false. There have been many interracial romances in American movies and television, from 1971's Omega Man to TV's Ally McBeal. There's the Crying Game, (interracial AND cross gendered!)Capt. Kirk kissing Uhuru, the depiction of a black man married to a white Jewish women in "Byrd" and on and on. Your claim may have been true years ago, but has not been the case for the past three to four decades.

reply

there are anyway so few interracial romances in American movies ...

in the reality there are many mixed family, but Hollywood forgets it...

and this thing has ridiculous effects sometime, like in this movie, when there is not a logical and natural goodbye kiss between Julia and Denzel... only because someone thinks (in his opinion) it's scandalous...

heck, we are in the XXI century!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree gtarna! i really do. and i hate to say this but: Mr.Denzel Washington (though i love thie man so much, becuase he's a wonderful actor/man/etc.) made a mistake! he has so much power over people, beacause so many people respect him, but as you can see he doesn't use it. i could be wrong, maybe he made the right decision, but somewhere, some black man who people look up to has got to promote interracial romances in movies! someone has to! someone has to stand up and help break down the barriers that are smaller, but still there between races! he has the power to do it! and i trust that man but he doesn't use it! and it makes me so mad .. because the more i read of people commenting on how he made the choice him self (as does he in ALL his movies) i realize that its not fair! i want to help so bad but i hold no power, no one cares what i say, so i can't get the message out, but he could and he does nothing about it! its not fair because he could do so much!!

Is there a case to be made for the idea that a disinclination to interracial romance isn't racist? Is it racist to want to preserve differences rather than mixing everyone together into one homogenous mass? Just a thought...

reply

"Is it racist to want to preserve differences rather than mixing everyone together into one homogenous mass?"

In most cases, it is, because as sad as it is, it is these very differences that propagate hateful tendencies in people. Just a thought...

reply

Has anyone thought that this might not have anything to do with skin color? It wouldn't matter what race either character was - the way they parted was perfect for their characters. There was never any kind of sexual tension between them during the movie. The way it ended simple showed how they went from being strangers to trusting each other and being friends. Not everyone in the U.S. ends up kissing and then jumping into bed. Bravo for Denzel, if it was his choice, to not turn this thriller into a sexual encounter in the end!

So what you're actually friggin saying here, is that simply the existence of racial distinction in the human population brings out the worst in people, and that it therefore would be better off eradicated (presumably in the form of a mass miscegenation) as opposed to preserved?
Don't tell me that's not how your post reads, nor that it's not disgustingly ignorant.

reply

As I remember the book, there wasn't any romantic involvement between the characters. I guess Hollywood could have made changes, but don't most people complain when the movie is not true to the book.

reply

Actually, yeah, they did hook up at the end of the book.

reply

Sometimes men and women are just friends. I know that the book had a sexual relationship between the characters, but the movie kept my interest with the intimacy between the two of them. They protected each other and gave comfort when needed. How nice to find someone smile at you and want nothing other than to make sure you are okay.

Roger Ebert review excerpt: "Together they have a real chemistry, so potent that after the movie was over, I heard people complaining that they were never "allowed" to have a love affair. Any romance would have been rather tactless, of course, considering that the story takes place in the week or two immediately after her lover has been blown to pieces. Maybe with a Grisham story you tend to forget details like that."

reply

Thank-you for an expert opinion! I tend to think with my heart these days (something new). We do forget, that not everyone falls into bed. Sometimes it's prudent to wait.

But I do understand the undercurrent of wanting the more intimacy from two people that clicked. But I would hoped that men and women can be friends, and care about each other. That type of relationship can last forever.

It doesn't matter at all. I'm going to be all right, in spite of it all.

It was at Julia Robert's and Denzel Washington's request that the romance between Gray and Darby from the book not be brought into the movie.

reply

In the book, there is no romance between them. There is clearly an attraction, but they are too busy trying to stay alive. The book does end with the possibility of a relationship between as they both take a "lets see what happens approach".

reply

True. I should have clarified that.

reply

Denzel's request, not Julia's.

"Don't I have a pulse? Of course I wanted to kiss Denzel. It was his idea to take the damn scenes out."

reply

Well, that is the Hollywood stereotypical formula....every male character and female character MUST form a romantic bond.
Maybe a big protective older brother and younger sister is the bond they formed.
It is pretty tired to have to have only ONE possible blueprint....the male lead and female lead MUST become romantic.

reply

If this was today this film would be hitting us over the head with the idea of a romantic relationship between the 2.

reply

Possibly
