did he ever go back?

Ive just finished watching it and think the ending was terrible.

they should have shown it, 5 or 10 years down the line getting out and going back.

is there a sequel?

This movie is a work of fiction. With that said, how can you come up with a silly conclusion after he got out of jail?

The ending remind me of the classic movie Shane.
I wonder if the main theme is the same in both movies, maybe the director try to tell us that the time of the classic action hero who saved the day is over (or about to end) - the same as the cowboy era in the movie Shane.

This is perhaps a bit of an expansive interpretation because from what I remember in 1993 there are no hints about the end of action stars but maybe the director seen something we don't. Anyway, it's hard not to seen the resemblance between both movies.

If we summarize the discussion, I don't think he's going back.

Shane was a western movie from the 50s. This is an action karate movie in modern times

So what?
It's not uncommon for directors to be inspired by other genres and much older movies.

Shane ending represent the last day of the heroic cowboy era, maybe here the director inspired by the movie and wants to tell us that the action hero movies (Van Damme, Schwarzenegger, Steven Seagal) about the end.

I thought it was very uncommon for directors to use a western movie as template for a silly 1 man hero action movie

Maybe, but as you see in my other post, there are many similarity between the two movies.

When we think about that, is there really that big of a difference between the two genres? take the typical main character personality alone, you find many similar properties (A strong sense of justice, courage, protection of the weak...)

reply

I can give you a list of points of similarity between the two endings:

1. In both movies the main character is a stranger who find himself in a small town.
2. In both movie the main character connects with the child who sees him as a father figure and a hero.
3. Both child, less or more, are in the same age.
4. The main character said goodbye to the boy.
5. The boy begging him to come back.
6. Whether he returns or not remains in question (Van Damm does not answer the child's question - the same with Shane)?
7. In both cases the main character is injured by the end of the movie.
8. Shane leaves on a horse and Sam in a car.
9. Even the landscape are similar.
