Does Gaunt give it to Polly?

In the movie it shows them getting a little "up close and personal" with a kiss. How much futher does it go in the novel?

reply

If I recall correctly (it's been a few years) it doesn't go even that far in the novel.

reply

I haven't read the book in years, so I'll have to defer to the other poster's response.

As far as the film goes, I think we're meant to believe he does. Gaunt's the Devil, or at least a demon; his job here was to lead the people of Castle Rock into temptation and into sin... and premarital/extramarital sin is typically the "worst" sin, so I would say it goes all the way.

reply

Never heard it before that adultery would be the worst sin. I thought that the sin against the holy spirit is the worst, the only one that is unforgivable.

reply

there is no romantic link between Polly and Gaunt in the novel so far as i can remember, i read the book last year.

reply

You're right, there is none whatsoever.
However, Gaunt does jokingly requests oral sex from Myra Evans, the best friend of Brian's mother.

reply

Ok I just finsished that part, what is she doing haveing sex with the picture or the guy? WHat are they doing. Cause she is moaning and there both sweaty.

He didn't go very far with her in the book. Though, he did try to make a lady (Brian Rusk's mom, I believe) to give him a blow-job.

Actually, in the book, nobody likes to be touched by Guant, he makes their skin crawl. When he wants to be familiar (though not intimate), he touches the air above their skin. He very rarely makes any contact with anyone beyond shaking hands with them in the first instance.

As for the requested blow job that someone mentions below, I'm sure that was something Guant said for shock value, rather than a genuine request.

Gaunt (Max) does *something* to my skin, but it ain't "crawl"! ;-p By the way, doesn't Gaunt say something like, "Gobble my crank!" in the novel? LOL!

He does, but it was just in an effort to debase Myra Evans a little bit more than he already had. She eventually was willing, but he slapped her hands away. He has no real interest in sex in the slightest, though the phrase "oral sex gives me amnesia" is probably one of my favorite lines in the book.

PS: While Gaunt in the book did have a strange sex appeal, it went nowhere with anyone. Still, I can't complain about Max getting involved with Bonnie in the film, just because I'd pay good money to see Max involved with anybody. Amen to him doing *something* to your skins. ;)

"You must be odd, you two." Timothy Spall when told he's the most attractive man alive.

I just read the book recently and the other posters are right. There's nothing between Gaunt and Polly. He treats her pretty much the way he treats the other customers.

reply

They had to give the movie some sex appeal. If you remember they had bonnie in lingerie that was semi see through. She was attractive and had a good body and you have to show a little skin or have a sexual element in a movie like this to spice up the movie.

reply

In my most humble opinion, it seems a film with Bonnie Bedelia is not complete without some attention devoted to her voluminous fun bags.

Sorry I just had to say that...

In the movie I think any sexual connotations between Leeland and Polli was meant to be symoblic, he's seducing her into relying on him to fulfill a need.

I saw the movie before I read the book and I thought Von Sydow as a wonderful Gaunt. As I read the book Von Sydow was always the Gaunt I imagined. Darn him for being such a great actor.
