Was anyone as freaked out by the poor skinned dog in the closet as I was? I actually still am, I usually cover my eyes each time they show it because I know when it's coming but I can't bring myself to look at it. It's just so sickening. I was just wondering what other peoples' opinions of this particularly gruesome scene were. Thanks.
I saw this movie years ago, when I was very young, and you know what? That is the only part of the movie that sticks out in my mind! All I could remember was that the movie was called Needful Things, somebody gets an axe thingy in their head, somebody has bad arthritis, and that at one part there is a skinned Rotti!
In the book i think the dog was just stabbed - so the filmmakers decided to make the dog's death more horrific - funny because today anti-animal violence is one subject that they almost never explore in horror movies to the same depth as they explore anti-human violence - and i think that is the right approach.
We can be thankful Deodata is not emulated in that way.
That scene is about the only thing I really remember from this film, because it bothered me so much. As a lifelong dog lover, a scene like this bothers me way more than just about any scene of violence against a person. And before any budding genius says so, yes, I know full well it was just a movie and no actual dog was hurt. The IDEA was disturbing: not just to kill a dog, but to do it in a horrible way and then leave it where the person who loved it will happen across it is just so mean-spirited and sadistic that it made it impossible to enjoy the rest of the film. I watch scary movies for the thrills and chills, but not to get actually disturbed by things. I spent a later part of that night making out with a very attractive friend who was visiting from out of town, and still could hardly get that grisly image out of my head. I could punch the director in the nads for ruining that.
I completely agree. I am a huge animal lover and any time an animal dies onscreen, it deeply saddens me, even though it doesn't actually happen in real life.
I am currently watching Needful Things and am at the part where Nettie finds Raider. I had seen the movie before and knew the dog was killed but couldn't remember how. I feel so bad for Nettie. I mean, the way Raider was killed was just horrible. Why skin him and hang him up... he could have just stabbed the dog instead of doing something so much more horrific. I always hate when animals die in movies.
That was the only scene I didn't like in the movie. I don't like it when animals are harmed or killed in movies. I can enjoy a good adult human being killed but not kids or animals.
I know Gaunt was the true villain, but I disliked Hugh just as much just because of this. Even more than Keaton. Yeah, Keaton murdered his wife but he did so in a fit of rage and clearly regretted it later. What Hugh did to the dog was just plain evil and sadistic.
I had a nightmare where there was this shop that people knew they weren't supposed to go into, but it had a supernatural gravitas that drew you in. It wasn't an antique shop, it was a book store. But the whole vibe of my dream reminded me of this, and thus the poor dog.
Such a sad scene in the film, not just because it's a dog, but because it was such a brutal death. I hate graphic, prolonged violence on anybody in a film.
