The plot of this movie seems awfully similar to the little-know musical "Zombie Prom"...was it based on this movie?

No, Zombie Prom is more of an underlying allegory for anti-gay discrimination. It might have inspired Zombie Prom though.
shareThey ARE awfully similar, down to the first name of the zombie protagonists. The stories and characters are somewhat different however. I think they might have come up with the same theme independently, as there are similarities with folkloric motifs of dead lovers returning.

I'm very curious about this, because the play and the movie came out the same year,they both have the tales from the crypt comic theme, both seem to have the same social satire motif "zombie lover" ect. and both have to main characters named Eddie and Jonny I dug around and haven't been find an explanation
