I thought only the first came to theaters?
I just read that the second did too. What about the 3rd movie. Was that direct to video or theaters first?

shareThe first two were in cinemas, the rest were straight to video.
share3 actually had some limited releases.

The second movie made about $2 at the box office, so it's no surprise that they just started sending them straight to video.

I can attest to the fact that the second one was in theaters. I decided to go see it the Monday after its opening weekend and the movie was already out of theaters. I was so bummed.
shareI remember seeing the original in a theater when I was 13. Then I just
remember seeing the rest of them just at videostores.
I think the whole concepts of the movies after the first film just made it very hard to want to even try to put them in theatres, I mean the first had somewhat of a concept and a plot but the next few were like,WTF? I still enjoy them to this day because they do scare me yet help take the edge off with the whole humor aspect of it. I would love to see another one that was an actual gory horror film made by an awesome director and had a great script and put that in theatres.

I remember 2 having a very limited release but thought from 3 and after was DTV.

No it wasn't. The first 2 were the only ones with wide releases. The 5th one I think had a very limited release but overall the rest were straight to video.
Surprisingly the first one was a hit at the box office but the public just didn't catch on with the rest of the series.
I read somewhere that the fifth movie was supposed to get a theatrical release (there was also talk of a Leprechaun toy around that time), but nothing ever came of it.
