When Ozzie the painter first appears in the movie he opens a stick of gum and shoves it in his mouth just like Francis did 7 years earlier in Pee Wee's Big Adventure 1986.

Pee Wee gave Francis and his old man each a stick of gum, Francis got the black gum that made him drool black stuff and the old man got the RED HOT pepper gum.
