As i've grown older I've came to love this movie.

I was 9 or so when this movie came out, I saw it in theaters and didn't really care for it.

However as I've gotten older and grown to appreciate more older films, which this movie makes many references/in-jokes about I have really came to enjoy it and love it.

I have to wonder now, looking back, why the critics seemed to hate it? Surely many of the older people from that time, especially those that enjoyed action movies like Predator, Alien/s, Scarface, Commando, Rambo, etc could grasp the point of the movie which was lost on me at that age.

It's like a giant love letter to cheesy action movies of the 70's/80's while at the same time making fun of all the cliched elements in that genre.

Yes.

I liked it when I was younger because of the action. I like it now because of the spoofs of cheesy action movies.

The Villain is next.

Its just great fun... what a movie SHOULD BE! relax, and enjoy the silly.

Kinda sorta the same, except I didn't know about it when they played this in theaters. I wound up renting it on VHS from Blockbuster.

Otherwise, yes, viewing it as an adult made me appreciate the great writing in this film. As a kid, I didn't think too much of it and just passed it off as another popcorn flick.

There's so much more to it than meets the eye.

Is this the one where there's a joke about Stallone playing The Terminator in this alternate universe?

reply

Yep, this is it. Hilarious scene. I think they also discuss the 555 phone numbers prior to showing the cardboard cutout of Stallone.

Then check out this deepfake video to see what might have been...

^ Exactly this.

This film was created at the wrong time. It's a pastiche of the great 80s action genre but it probably didn't work too well at the time because there literally was no separation of time.

Like a fine wine though, it's aged superbly so if you are doing a rewatch of your favourite Rambos / Predators / etc then this is a great film to finish on.

When it first came out I wasn't that interested in seeing it (the idea of jumping into a movie screen seemed too fanciful). When I eventually did see it, though, I thought it was very funny. Can't be right all the time, I guess.
