Claire vs Ellie

So I was watching Jurassic World few days back and I kind of liked it but what struck me the most how much of a better woman protagonist Ellie is than Claire from JW. Ellie is competent, she is brave and certainly feels like a secure whole person rather than a Claire. Claire had the bigger evolution and she proved to be brave and everything but at the end of the day she always seemed like a damsel in distress that is capable of bravery but her main goal is to get a man. I like how together Ellie is. Both actresses did a great job but writing is much stronger in original Jurassic park. And i havent really thought how well written( and in a sense original) Ellie is in the first movie. Nice surprise.

She's just better than Claire. Ellie was really obnoxious if you rewatch JP. Not only that, she makes everything about feminism. Um, maybe people are trying to save you from dinosaurs because they're not jerks. Not because they think you're weak because you're a woman.

reply

She made one thing about sexism. And yeah, it really was just because she was a woman. Hammond even goes so far as to try and explain that he should go because he's a man and she should stay because she's a woman. That was ridiculous, and she had every right to be upset.

Who's more useful in the jungle? The old man with a bad leg who needs a cane to get around? Or the young woman who spends her life working outdoors in the field?

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

It wasn't the time or the place. As much as I hate Hammond (and I do), he probably wasn't normally sexist. Some men get upset when they see women in danger. Besides, they were all in danger. Why lecture them?

reply

It's never the time or place for sexism. Hammond started it, not Ellie.

Some men get upset when they see women in danger.

I'm sure they do. It's still ridiculous for the crippled old guy to feel he should go out over the healthy young woman. Her healthy two legs and vagina are better than his crippled leg and penis.

Why lecture them?

Ten words is not a lecture.

I like Hammond. But Ellie was right to call him out on his nonsense.

reply

She was going to until she stopped herself. I'm not for sexism either, but if a situation like that you have more on your mind. It sort of, imo, "this is a movie" moment. Also, Hammond should have gone. He made the problem, not Ellie or Arnold (who died).

reply

She wasn't going to. She said one line and dropped it.

And no, the crippled old guy should not have gone. That helps no one.

As we saw, there was going to be running involved.

reply

You know what would have been sexist? If Hammond had suggested she should go because she was JUST a woman.

Suggesting he should put himself in danger just because he is a man is actually sexist against men.

reply

Not only that, she makes everything about feminism.

No she didn't. Overtly, she made one remark related to sex/gender dynamics "in survival situations" and another tongue-in-cheek remark about women taking over the Earth. That's it.
