Chicago? C'mon, really?

Granted, this movie was made in 93 so the city was different back then, so I won't nitpick on city choice. But where would they have been going to see a major boxing match that they wouldn't have been able to hop back on a major road or something? Allstate arena? That's up in Rosemont. Definitely not the United center. They make it seem like this is near the south side, but but there's no where they'd be headed that they would end up in that situation.

I happen to love this movie, I saw it once in the theaters and it's on again now. Back then I didn't realize it was supposed to be in "Chicago".

reply

okay, so now they're at the part where they're at the market. There's an elevated train and a sign that says fullerton market. two guesses would be that they're off of the blue line near california(only point of elevation that hits fullerton) or it could be somewhere off the green line and the fullerton market name is just a name.

either way, theyre definitely on the northside. humboldt park/logan square in 93 was definitely a scary area. And that would mean these guys were on their way to allstate arena.

reply

I dont know exactly where they were at. But it looks a little like cabrini green without the 40 story projects. Cabrini area looked just as scary and dirty as in the movie at night. I ll bet it was all filmed throughout Chicago getto's. Maybe even at south 66th and western ave.

reply

I have always wondered how the people in the ghetto feel about movies being filmed there. Do the movie producers say

"hey, this is a pretty *beep* dump area, you guys dont mind if we set up here and shoot a multi-million dollar movie real quick, do ya? Thanks. We'll be out of your way in a few days. By the way, stay in school, you'll make it out."

reply

The project scenes were filmed at the Lathroop Projects on the Northwest side at Clybourn and Diversey. I heard some other parts were filmed on the near south side. The whole scene in the sewers was probably filmed on a set in Hollywood.

reply

it was filmed in cincinnati ohio

reply

where'd you hear that? that seems odd given that jeremy piven is in it. he's part of the effort trying to bring more filmmaking to Chicago.

reply

Does anyone use the filming location links on the mainpage? It's clearly listed as Chicago and L.A.

reply

We know it was filmed in Chicago, we're more concerned about the locations in the Chicago/Chicagoland area that they used.

reply

According to the author of this article...

http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=642693

it's in the south side... I managed to locate the area on google maps that looks similar to the app buildings (when they look for a phone)... and the railroads are nearby and something like car parking lot

google: "w s water market chicago", it will show you the area between the railroads and the app complex above between w s water market and w maxwell st

not sure if that's it

reply

The bank shown says Southeast Bank, yet everything else indicates northwest or near west side, including the use of Fullerton. If they were indeed coming from the North Shore, then it's very unlikely they could have ended up anywhere south of Madison St.

reply

moviefanaticfan - you mention Cabrini Green, is that the same place as in the movie Candyman? I'm not sure what city that movie was supposed to be set in and I assumed that when they talked about Cabrini Green it was a fictitous place.

reply

Yes Cabrini Green is where Candyman was supposed to be and yes it WAS real...torn down now...there is a Starbucks there now...haha...this movie is pretty bad and would never really happen in Chicago

reply

It's obviously Chicago bc of all the Olde Style signs popping up all over the place in this movie.

Yeah, Candyman was filmed in Cabrini Green, which was a real housing project, they had to let the gangsters there be in the film as extras not to interfere with the cast members. On the last day of shooting there however, their van was hit with a sniper bullet!

Cabrini Green has been mostly demolished now though.

a couple other location items

-emilo's characters drivers license lists evanston,il address
-leary's character makes refernece in condo line to their lake shore vs south side or something along those lines

reply

It's a movie version of the city, so there aren't any actual locations within the fiction of the film. Also, in 1993, there was no Allstate Arena or United Center. Look it up, those of you with no sense of history.

reply

No one who ever shoots a movie in Chicago ever presents it the way it actually is. There's this goofy mix & match going on so that in one shot people in a car are heading north on LSD past McCormick Place when the shot before was on the curve near Belmont Harbor southbound.

Many directors/producers seem to like the city and what it offers, but actual geography is a jumbled mess in order to get all the atmospheric shots that they need.

@ Mr. Literal--
The Allstate Arena has been around since 1977, albeit with different names. The United Center is not the same thing as Chicago Stadium, but they both served the same purpose and the United Center is one block west of the location of its predecessor. Your quip about lacking a sense of history seemed a bit snarky, so I felt obliged to point out your own mistake.

reply

I made no mistake. Allstate Arena is a name; has the name been around since '77? Or even '93? No. Therefore the Allstate Arena has not been around since then. You obviously know my name; what do you think it means? Pay attention.

Talk about splitting hairs. Relax and try to be helpful rather than condescending...

reply

I was accused of a mistake I had not made, and going by the name Mr. Literal should make it clear I will be precise when necessary...so who are you to tell me what to do? Why don't you follow your own advice and be helpful instead of condescending? Think before you type, people.

reply

I am simply stating my opinion. I understand trying to be "precise when necessary" but you come accross as condescending and elitist rather than knowledgable or helpful.

I go by the name TizziLish, does that mean people are supposed to come up with some conclusion about me from that? It's a name on a message board.

What bugs me the most is two people start fighting and pointing fingers and we never get anywhere at all. Nice, and thanks guys. I really enjoyed the popcorn moment. Like watching a movie without the actual movie. Just sit back and watch you guys fight.

No more IMDB boards for me!

Mrlteral,

the point of the thread was to establish landmarks not to determine when certain companies decided to take over the commercial rights to stadiums in and around the chicagloand area...you're trying to sound smart but really you just are coming off as a miserable person...you must be REAL fun to talk to at a social event though.

reply

If you want to really know where these scenes were shot check out my site http://www.itsfilmedthere.com/2011/02/judgment-night.html

I have not yet found the exact spot where they come out of the sewer but I will eventually.

Enjoy

reply

Um nooo, but there was Rosemont Horizon and Chicago Stadium (which turned into Allstate and United Center...I should know...I grew up here and work at the UC)...I just watched this today for the first time since it came out and with the direction they were going (east on I-55 to east I-94) there is no place anywhere that direction that would have a boxing match

A lot of this was filmed in Boston and there were several references to the "North Shore".

Denis Leary and Eric Shrody two of the main bad guys are both from Boston. Also the very first scene where they are in traffic takes place on the Tobin Bridge, or the old Tobin. Anyway I was very confused by where exactly this film was pretending to take place.

reply

False. Chicago's North Shore is the northern suburbs like Evanston, Lake Forest, Glencoe, etc. Also, Erik Schrody "Everlast" was born in New York and raised in California definitely not Boston.

reply

The Allstate Arena/Rosemont Horizon discrepancy has been done to death. They were not going there; there is nothing that looks like the scenes from this movie between Evanston and Rosemont. There was no United Center, but across the street was the Chicago Stadium. The neighborhood was a lot dicier then. Another choice could be the Chicago International Amphitheater at 42nd and Halsted, also a very dicy neighborhood.

reply

[deleted]

I was positive it took place in LA, as they were driving to Vegas, but then, i wasn't sure, as the film wore on... almost like a fictional city.

reply

It would have been Chicago Stadium.
