I was wondering...

What are the translations of the Character's names
The ones I know:
Suyuan: Long cherished-wish (Long-held grudge)
Jing-Mei: Pure Essence
Chwun Hwa: Spring Flower
Chwun (?): Spring Rain (<^May have these two mixed up)
Ying-Ying: Clear reflection
Does anyone know the other names, Canning, An-mei, Lindo, Tin, etc. Also, could you tell me if any of the above are wrong?

reply

universalparadox,

nothing i know that you dont, only that the chuwn hua thing is correct, and the (?) is Yu, because 'Yu' is rain in chinese, and 'Hua' is flower. 'Chuwn' as you'd guess is spring.

reply

An-mei means "Blessing of America" and is also Amy Tan's given Chinese birth name.

reply

hi : i am chinese. i think JING-MEI is not just pure essence, MEI here means little girl .
YING YING is shining.
Canning is actually not chinese name.
AN-MEI are two word , AN means peaceful, and MEI means beautiful. surely it is not blessing of USA, she was born in china, at that time her parents had no idea that she will came to US one day.
lindo is also not chinese name, according to the book, it is a name that she gave herself when first came to US, which she thought is an american name. TIN i am really puzzled.
