something I don't understand...

I know Chinese customs and etiquette are way different from ours, but if I were at someone's house for dinner, and they brought out a dish and said that the dish was badly prepared and too bad to eat and then encouraged me to eat it, shouldn't I at least be a little wary of trying it? I would find it a little insulting for someone to try to get me to eat something they said was no good. I know the cook is just fishing for compliments, but the whole thing just doesn't sit well with me.

the reason lindo said that is chinese people are told to be modest and not to praise themselves.
and to friends above, who is to blame is not what the story is all about. it presents how cultural difference affacts daily life. and at its best, it hope that people from different backgroud to share a peaceful life together.
the reason i love this part is not that the americans do something wrong. nobody in this scene has bad intention, but they are from different culture, and that's the reason of the conflict(if there is any)
