I've read the book and I absolutely loved it. But sometimes I wish I hadn't seen the movie version of other books because of what they changed or left outof the movie. I loved the book, will I like the movie and what are some of the thingss they changed. Thanks so much.
Like you, I loved the book. It's one of the prettiest books I've ever read, and one of the few I could read times and times again.
The film is good, in my opinon. Though lacking some of the nerve from the book (again, my opinon). Some minor changes has been made, though mostly acceptable changes. The most apparent change of the story is the story of Yin Yin St.Clair (her relationship to her husband, and the pregnancy/baby). This is the change I have greatest problems with.
What I miss in the film is, as mentioned, some kind of nerve. The epic feeling is, as I see it, not so strong as in the book. And I fail to feel the same kind of sympathy for the charachters when watching the film.
That doesn't mean the film is bad, far from it. It's just in my opinon an acceptable adabtion of a great book. But that's it; acceptable.
This movie gave me a feeling in the pit of my stomach and not in a good way. Unlike The Assassination of Jesse James... or Taxi Driver where you feel and sympathize for the main characters, being Robert Ford and Travis Bickle, and they are the bad guys that you're supposed to despise. Maybe that speaks to the quality of filmmakers Andrew Dominik and Martin Scorsese are. All right I lied about liking the book. Quite frankly I couldn't get through the first 50 pages. However I thought maybe by asking some of you sentimental women on this board that I could still get the basic story down enough to write my paper. But when I started watching this movie last night I couldn't get over how dumb the story was and how absolutely horrendous the acting was. I'm talking Dukes of Hazard bad acting. This film attempts to be sincere and sentimental but movies that have to constantly tell you what characters are thinking are just horrible. This might be one of the most painful movies to get through and I don't mean in a good way. The story constantly shows the mother thinking her daughter doesn't love her and the daughter thinking her mother doesn't love her. This subject is so stupid and ridiculous it's something you might find on a made for TV Lifetime movie. Anyhow this movie was really bad and failed miserably at its objective. Yeah yeah we get it Asian women and women in general don't "communicate" with their mothers well enough and how sad(sarcasm for all you idiots out their). In the end I hated the movie and everything about it I honestly can't think of a single redeeming quality.
Martin Scorsese is the greatest living film director and second all-time to only John Ford.
Yes, you should watch the movie. I read the book and loved it, and I have watched the movie many times and love it also. Just remember that a movie can never be the same as a book. I think the director, Wayne Wang, recognized that, and he did not try to duplicate the book. He used the story to create a visual experience based on the characters and their lives, and he did a wonderful job. I found that the movie in no way interfered or diminished what I got from the book. I imagine that Amy Tan had a lot of input on how the movie was made, as it really was her insight that made the book so good.
