Caucasian looking Asians

Why is it that anytime there is an Asian actress she must have very caucasian features? The girls in this movie were gorgeous, but the had more caucasian features than the typical Asian (straighter nose, less round face, etc.) Current popular Asian actresses we have such as Lucy Liu and Lisa Ling all are greater caucasian features.

Why are you treating North Koreans as if it were a separate race from the general Korean population? You say that in parts of China and Japan, people are mixed with Caucasians. Caucasians in these two countries are hardly negligible especially in Japan. There's even less mixed Asian-Caucasians. And what gave you the idea that there are geographical areas in these countries where there are lots of mixed people? Actually southern Chinese are more darker than northern Chinese. Turks in East Asia are Asian looking since all Turks were originally Asian. The two Koreas and Japan are among the most ethnically homogenous peoples in the world. Roundness of the face is not a general characteristic of either China or Korea. Some people have it, some people don't. It doesn't matter if you're round-faced or not, there's no majority for it.

I am Korean. jeonun hanguk saramieyo. i said Turks in East Asia are Asian looking. Turkey is in western Asia. The interesting thing is that the Korean and the vast majority of the Japanese geneology came from central Asia as well as the Mongols, Manchus, Turks, Hungarians, Finns, Estonians and the people of central Asia today. We all share a common ancestry just like the Indo-Europeans. This shows that there are even common ancestries between some Caucasian and Asian peoples. Remember how the Huns invaded China? The Huns also invaded Europe under Attila the Hun. The Huns that invaded China were probably Asian looking and the ones that invaded Europe were Caucasian looking. I understand that there are many border areas in the world where the people have intermingled but that shouldn't be used as a way to characterize the entire population of an ethnicity.

Turks in Turkey mostly look like regular mediterraneans because before they arrived there, there were already Greeks living there (think Troy) whom they mixed with. Original Turks, like the ones still living in Central-Asia and Cbina's Xinjiang province, were indeed asian-looking. Note that asian doesn't just mean East-Asian/mongroloid. As for the Huns, they were most likely a mix of Central-Asian and mongroloid stock. After their defeat at the hands of Han Wudi, they were continually driven westwards, eventually ending up in Eastern Europe where they mixed with the locals.

wtf is your problem. I thought we were having a somewhat friendly argument about an interesting topic and then you start with the name calling. Your problem is that you assume too much. You assumed that i wasn't Korean. Now you're assuming that i'm not educated. What are you, 12 years old? Why don't you grow up and learn how to argue better. If you have to resort to this type of behavior to prove a point, then you're not even worth being on this board. Just shows how you can't handle a little criticism. babo.

actually ,aisan women look various. and according to the standard nowadays in asian, lucy liu is hardly a beauty( no offense, she is attactive somehow). so lucy liu has an Asian face but not a beautiful asian.

reply

Actually, it's mostly Asian actresses with the more "Asian" features who are more likely to get Hollywood jobs. Lucy Liu is very slanted-eyed so to the average American, she's the "typical" Asian. For some reason, you don't see a lot Asian actresses whose eyes aren't "Asian enough" in American film or TV. Well, maybe Kelly Hu's an exception (she's part white).

yeah the first replier was right, there is the malay race and the mongoloid race in asia. i like it a lot! ;)

stop this racist garbage about asians looking like caucasians they are simply how some asians look like end of story. And who finds a flat nose, round face, small eyes attractive?? of course good looking asian actresses gets to be famous (in Asia at least, let's not get into Lucy Liu...)

reply

The Malay race is different to the Mongoloid race, but they are closely related. Just like Pacific Islanders and Hawaiians. Not everyone in East-Asia has full on slanty eyes, just like White Noses, people vary in eyelids. Look at Renee zellweger, she has slanty eyes but she could never pass for Asian.

besides, Ming na is part-macanese, so she has portuguese ancestry which is why she isnt as Asian looking as others.

I'm an Asian American myself and I don't think of myself as an Americanized looking Asian. I'm not sure why but when I look at Asians from Asia the definately have an Oriental feel to them.

One thing that striked me when I went to Hong Kong was that there are as many different looking Asian people as there are white people and African American people. I think it's so weird when people here say that all Asians look alike when in reality we all don't.

reply

Pfft. Chill, children. They're all beautiful- isn't that what matter

reply

Caucasian features? Are you saying that most asian people have slanty eyes, round faces and fat noses? Give me a break! Are you trying to say that asian women are ugly? You are basically stereotyping a whole group of people.

reply

I think this is one of those cases where you are so wrapped up in self righteousness and political correctness that you are actually the racist, or at least come across as one.

reply

WTF are you talking about?

They chose the actresses because of their TALENT. BTW, Lucy Liu and Lisa Ling look very Asian to me so I don't know wtf you're talking about.

reply

Living in London, I see many Chinese women, and the women in the film don't look very different.

reply

I thought the film showed the extremely wide variety of Chinese faces. Huang Tai-tai, the matchmaker and her friend, Ah Ping the pregnant maid, Lindo's mom, the mothers, all looked very authentic to me.

The actresses were chosen for their looks in that there had to be a family resemblence, but Amy Tan wanted an ensemble cast, and she wanted mostly unknowns. She didn't even want France Nuyen to be involved. She has too much of a "name". As it was, Nuyen played very low-key, but her performance was still so heartwrenching that an entire scene was left on the cutting room floor by Tan's orders. Took too much away from the others, she said. Nuyen is still *beep!*ed about that.

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!
