-A Non Asian Woman's View of Movie

I am ashamed to say that I have never read the book but that this movie is one of my favorites of all time. I love the history and beauty of the Asian culture and never fail to grill my Malaysian aunt by marriage about her culture and the cultures of the Far East.

I have loved this movie since I first saw it in 1993, though I may see the movie for what it actually is, a movie about women overcoming odds not only with their culture but with men, love and family.

Thoughtout the movie I didn't see any male bashing Asian male or otherwise, besides every culture out there has men who are scum and men that are great. As far as the asian women going for white men, I think the count was about half and half on that account. Hey my aunt and uncle are a mixed heritage marriage so I would definitely not be one to cast stones.

People that make something of the white male/asian female are missing the point. It wasn't about intercultural marriage, it was about marriage and love of a woman and a man, period.

So many people miss the points of this story that it saddens me. The story is about female overcoming obstacles in life. It's about strength, self worth, love, and most of all the stories of mother's and daughters. For me especially the mother/daughter bond between Waverly and Lindo because it is my mother and me. And that part of the story has nothing to do with race.

For everyone that reads this look past the angry hate filled speeches filling this board and look at the true story. This story is about women, mothers, daughters and sisters overcoming odds, learning their own strength and worth and in the end finding love, happiness and peace.

Aeriella, thank you for a wise and very correct comment!! This is exactly the point of the film, and the book too. You should read it, it's beautiful! I've read it 5 times and I never grow tired of it.
