What happened to June's Mother's First Husband?

In China, June's mother leaves her two babies on the side of the road, with a note asking someone to take them to their father in Shanghai. Whatever happened to their father? They said June's mother was picked up after that, and woke up in a hospital. I don't recall any mention of whether she hooked up with her husband again, or what happened to him.

So were the twins brought to him?
If they were would it have been that hard for the mother to find them?
If they weren't how did the mother's friends find them XX years later?

I find this part confusing. I'm guessing it might be better explained in the book.

This is all in the book, but the girls' father was already dead. The girls were adopted by some very kind but illiterate people. They kept the note, not knowing what it said until they got someone to read it for them. They at once began looking for the family, to no avail. From America, Suyuan wrote dozens of letters to friends back in China to keep looking. By then everything had changed, even street names, no way to trace anything. One of these friends discovered twin women in a department store who looked something like Suyuan, so went right up to them and asked them. And that's how the twins were found.

You want sausage? I've got sausage, too.
