Lindo's 10-year-old husband
I missed the beginning of the movie, so I didn't see Lindo's full story.
Is Lindo's young husband Waverley's father?

SPOILERS AHOY.
No, even though Tianyu was Lindo's first husband; I don't even think the marriage was consummated. Not sure how much you missed, but she convinces Huang Tai-Tai that she wasn't destined to be part of the Huang family. The family releases her from the marriage and (in the book) she makes it to America where meets Tin Jong in an English class, I think.

Ah ok thanks for that.
I remember her ripping her clothes and messing her hair and screaming stuff that terrified the superstitious family... that must have been her convincing the family to release her.

Nice summation, but ... the family BELIEVED her story??!
shareAbsolutely they did. Lindo had observed little details about the family and servants for a long time and made up a story that was plausible to people who believed in these types of signs and spiritual communication. If you notice, An Mei's mother did the same thing by killing herself on just the right day.
Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.
They were stupid to think a ten year old boy was mature enough to father a baby, and blaming her for not getting pregnant just made things worse...I have to wonder what the heck they were thinking! :(

In the book, Lindo had lived in the family from age twelve, but was in training, so to speak. She had known him her entire life. Didn't think much of him. The actual marriage didn't take place until she was about fifteen, her husband fourteen. The mother-in-law did not expect her to have children until she was sixteen, making her husband fifteen which is still pretty young, but more reasonable than ten.
