what line or scene makes you cry?

when Waverly's mom tells her "now you make me happy" when they are in the beauty parlor
and next when June's mother tells her "its not wrong to hope" and "you have best quality heart","you have style no one can teach must be born this way"
and as for the scene June's mother's story just brings me to tears every time as a mother of 2 girls that gets me
what about you?

reply

Agreed, when Waverly and her mom are in the beauty parlor, "Now you make me happy" made me cry tears of understanding and joy.

I feel like a wuss for admitting this. but the very end *always* makes me cry. the look of sadness when the Twins realize their Mom is gone. and when June tells them she has come to take her mother's place as they hug. and in voiceover she says "It's enough for them. and for me..." it's just a really beautiful scene.

~I love the rhythm it is my methoood!~

Another scene that makes me cry, but then laugh is when Ying Ying confronts Lena about her marriage. Especially when she says, "...and leave this lop-sided house!"

I hated Ying's Ying's daughter. She was getting pissed because the cat had fleas. Well that's what happens when you have a cat. You get fleas. Plus, she kept bitching at him for eating ice cream.

Why the hell would they put something made of glass on something unstable like that table. Gosh, both of them were stupid.

These minor annoyances were signs of deeper troubles in their marriage.

Nothing. As a Chinese person, I wanted to love this movie, but I didn't.

I like drama when it's subtle. I don't emotional manipulation. This director has the dramatic subtlety of a soap opera director. It really becomes tiresome when scene after scene is mother and daughter crying, cue the dramatic music, zoom into the character's face full of tears, then zoom into the face of the daughter, also full of tears. It's obvious, the director really really really wants us to cry, really badly.

Watch this and a soap opera back to back, there's very little difference in direction.

It's too bad, because I was really enjoying the first 40 minutes of the movie. I thought it was very accurate about its observations of Chines cultures, and I liked the idea of clashes between different generations...I just wish it didn't go all out on the melo-drama.

I watched this movie again a few months ago and I was tearing up so much at the scene when young Lindo's family left her so Lindo would live with Huang Tai Tai.

There's the scene where it's very close to the day she had to part her family and her mother's saying things about Lindo's appearance.
But the older Lindo's voiceover says "My mother did not say these things because she didn't love me. She said these things so she would not wish for something that was no longer hers."

Damn this movie. I flipped on the last 30 minutes or so and cried like a baby. It's been a few years since I've seen it and the scene with June, her mother and the feelings of not being good enough. I can totally relate.

Is old the plight of the Chinese mothers is somewhat unique to the Chinese people, EVERYONE can relate to the issues between the mothers/daughters and daughters/mates. Who hasn't felt like they're never good enough in their mother's eyes? Who never has been forced to do something we didn't want to do? Who hasn't had a crappy relationship with a guy? These, and all of the other issues, are universal.

I was crying the whole time. LOL. Suffice it to say: all the scenes that took place in China, and all the scenes where mothers were relating to their daughters.
